What To Know About This Production

Reston Community Players’ upcoming production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum promises to revel in the comic DNA that connects ancient Roman farce to 20th-century American humor. Built on Stephen Sondheim’s brisk score and the book by Larry Gelbart and Burt Shevelove, Forum uses the timing and rhythm of vaudeville sketches—quick entrances and exits, double takes, sight gags, and bawdy punchlines—that once filled music halls and burlesque stages. It also anticipates the architecture of the television sitcom: stock characters with exaggerated desires, tangled plots of mistaken identity, and a reset button at the curtain that leaves the audience laughing, not brooding. RCP’s staging highlights the classic mechanics of comic construction—setups delivered with precision, running gags that escalate with each return, and the time-honored “rule of three” that makes the payoff land with maximum delight. The result is a joyous evening that connects the zaniness of Plautus to vaudeville banter, from Abbott and Costello’s wordplay to the ensemble chaos of I Love Lucy and Three’s Company, reminding us that laughter is a tradition as carefully crafted as any art form.
Forum will be directed by Michael Barret Jones. Jones is a nonprofit leader, theatre artist, and director with more than 30 years of experience in arts and community organizations across New Jersey, New York City, and the greater Washington, D.C. area.
