What To Know About This Production

Vanya & Sonia & Masha & Spike is Christopher Durang’s wickedly funny play about family, regret, hope, and the choices we make in life.  


Middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia share a home in Bucks County, PA, where they bicker and complain about the circumstances of their lives. When their movie-star sister, Masha, swoops in with her new boy toy, Spike, old resentments flare up, eventually leading to threats to sell the house. One night out at a costume party with Snow White, an evil queen, and a few dwarves can steer everything into perspective. Throw in a sassy maid who can predict the future, and a lovely young aspiring actress and you have all of the ingredients for a hilarious night at the theatre. Winner of the 2013 Tony Award® for Best Play and of the 2013 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play, Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Play. Directed by Jonathan Verge.

What To Expect At Auditions

Casting: All roles are open. This show only has roles for adult actors. Please choose only one audition time slot. We will email you with your specific five-minute audition slot. NOTE: Ages listed with character information are only a guide used in casting.

Prepare: Auditioners are asked to prepare a one-minute comedic monologue, preferably from contemporary theatre repertoire or a Chekhov play. Actors may be asked to read from the script.

Community Theatre: UP is a community theatre that strives for excellence. Experience is not needed to audition or be cast in our productions. We often teach as we go. We are friendly and welcoming and want you to succeed so please don't be nervous! We do not subscribe to favoritism and cast based solely on the best decisions for the production.

  • Vanya - Male, 45-60, living in Bucks County; resigned to his life, more or less, after spending his adulthood caring for his aging parents along with his sister, Sonia.
  • Sonia - Female, 45-60, Vanya’s adopted sister, living with him in Bucks County; discontent, upset, regretful, and kind.
  • Masha - Female, 45-60, Vanya and Sonia’s sister; glamorous & successful movie star.
  • Spike - Male, 25-30, Masha’s new lover; sexy, well-built, self-absorbed, but otherwise outgoing & friendly. Must be comfortable performing shirtless in your underwear.
  • Nina - Female, 20-30, lovely, sincere, would-be actress, visiting her aunt & uncle next door; start-struck, earnest & energetic.
  • Cassandra - Female, 30+, cleaning lady & soothsayer; Metaphysical practitioner.
