CCCT announces auditions for our spring production of The Wizard of Ozwritten by L. Frank Baum, music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg, with additional background music by Herbert Stothart. We are doing the RSC Version. The creative team consists of Kathleen Richardson, Director; Cindy Perkins, Music Director; and Kaleigh Huxley, Assistant Director.

Auditions will be held:

Sun Jan 14, 2024 6pm - 9pm: Kemah Boardwalk - Adults 15 - 65+

Mon Jan 15, 2024 6pm - 8pm: University Baptist Church - Kids and Teens Age 6 - 15

Tue, Jan 16, 2024 6pm - 9pm: Kemah Boardwalk - Adults 15 - 65+

Wed Jan 17, 2024 7pm - 9pm: Call Backs if needed

Rehearsals will begin Monday, Jan 15 and will typically be weeknight evenings, with possible rehearsals/work days on weekends. Children's Chorus will rehearse Monday evenings only until the last 2 weeks of rehearsal, when they will be called for rehearsal every night.

Tech Week will be March 9 -13, 2024 at the Bayou Theatre, UHCL Campus.

Performances March 14 - 17, 2024 at the Bayou Theatre, UHCL Campus.

The creative team seeks a diverse company of actors of all ages. Actors of all ethnicities will be equally considered for all roles and actors of color are encouraged to audition. All roles are open. A complete list of characters is provided later in this notice - it's there, I promise, just keep going through the process and you'll get there!! In addition to the principals, we are seeking:

CHILDREN'S CHORUS: The little people of Munchkinland. Long oppressed, and happy to be freed, the Munchkins will (mostly) be played by children. Group singing and coordinated movement required. Dance experience a plus. There are some featured roles among the munchkins, such as The Coroner, The Lollipop Guild, and The Lullaby League. Children may possibly be used as Flying Monkeys and/or Ozians.

THE OZ ENSEMBLE: 12-15 versatile dancers/singers/character actors who will step into iconic featured parts and fun, fantastical roles. There are roles within the ensemble for strong singers, strong dancers, and strong comic actors, but no one person needs to have all the skills!

THE DANCE ENSEMBLE: 6-8 trained dancers who will be used in several big, Broadway style musical numbers. There are solo and small group roles within the Dance Ensemble. We are seeking dancers with ballet/tap/jazz training. Singing is not required to audition solely for the Dance Ensemble.

FOR ALL, focus on acting/connecting/expression! Perform for us like you’re performing in your living room for your cat/dog/hamster/etc. Perfection not expected! We welcome singers/actors/dancers of all skill and experience levels! This is a show that truly has something for everyone!

What To Expect At Auditions

Auditions will consist of 3 parts:

Vocals:

Please prepare 16 - 32 bars of a song in the style of the show that best shows off your vocal abilities. We will have a speaker available with Wifi/Bluetooth if you would like to bring an accompaniment track. There will be no accompanist available. If you are auditioning only for a non-singing role, you do not need to prepare a song (unless you just want to!)

Acting:

Acting audition will consist of cold readings from the script. You do not need to prepare any monologues or other material ahead of time.

Dance:

Please come dressed to move, with appropriate shoes. You will be taught a short combination and audition in groups. There will be 2 separate audition combinations, one for those interested in the Dance Ensemble, and one for everyone else.

Time Slots:

All children 15 and younger should audition on Monday. All teens 16 and up, plus adults, should audition Sunday and/or Tuesday. You are welcome to attend both nights, but you are not required to. Please indicate the time slot that you plan on attending. The exact location information will be emailed closer to the actual audition dates.

Available Roles

  • Dorothy Gale - Female, 16-25. Vocal Range: G3 - C5 (E5). Young Kansas girl, expressive and strong-willed, in search of something more. Very strong singer/dancer.
  • Hunk / Scarecrow - Male, 21 - 65+. Vocal Range: Bb2 - F#4 (Ab4) Plucky and clever in a pinch, even when lacking a brain. Strong actor with an honest quality. Excellent dancer - light acrobatic skills a bonus.
  • Hickory / Tinman - Male, 21 - 65+. Vocal Range: Bb2 - G4 Desperate for a heart. A kind-hearted romantic. Singing and dance required.
  • Zeke / Cowardly Lion - Male, 21 - 65+. Vocal Range: Bb2 - F4 A mix of bravado and cowardice. Should move well. A cuddly actor with excellent comic timing. Strong baritone to F.
  • Miss Gulch/Wicked Witch of the West - Female, 25-65+. Character villain with an over-the-top stage presence. Excellent comic actress with a killer cackle. Non-singing.
  • Glinda - Female, 25-45. Vocal Range: G3 - C5. Benevolent and beloved. Strong soprano. Poppies and bubblegum.
  • Emerald City Guard - Male, 25 - 65+. Vocal Range: Bb2 - Eb4 Flamboyant and glitzy. Strong comic actor and singer with a big stage presence.
  • Professor Marvel/The Wizard - Male, 40-65+. Older father figure with an eccentric flair. Basic conjuring or sleight of hand a bonus. Non-singing.
  • Aunt Em - Female, 25-65+. Aunt Em is a demanding farm woman, but she loves her niece. Non-singing.
  • Uncle Henry - Male, 25 - 65+. Uncle Henry is Dorothy's pleasant, hard-working uncle. Non-singing, unless doubled as the Emerald City Guard.
