Shine Theater is thrilled to be presenting "The Sound Of Music" June 20-23 and June 27-30th, 2025. The show will be presented in partnership with The Mary C. Okeefe Cultural Center in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Directed by Pam Jones with Musical Direction by Alicia Dubose, this show promises to be amazing!

What To Expect At Auditions

**We are happy to see that you are interested in auditioning for the show! ****Here's what you need to know about auditions:*Auditions for Von Trapp children will be on Saturday, February 22nd, at 9 am. We ask that all auditioners for these roles be there at 9. If you are unable to make it to this time or date, please email us at Debbie.shinetheater@yahoo.com to let us know so that we may find an alternative time.Auditions for all other roles will be Friday, Feb 21st, from 6:30 to 9 or Sunday, the 23rd, from 2:00 to 4:00. Callbacks will take place Tuesday, Feb. 25th, from 6:30 - until. Auditions will occur at Heritage United Methodist Church in Biloxi on Pops Ferry Road.Auditioners will be asked to sing one minute of a song in the style of the show.Please bring a digital accompaniment with you. We will have a Bluetooth speaker to connect to.Auditioners must sing to accompaniment and not a Capella.Please do not sing songs from the show.Auditioners will only have to sing in front of the Audition team and not with other auditioners.If you cannot attend an in-person audition, video submissions may be sent to Debbie.shinetheater@yahoo.com. Please note that all actors will be responsible for the majority of the cost of their costumes. We understand that some actors will have many costumes and some a few. Every effort will be made to keep expenses low and to work with whoever needs help covering this expense. Please do not let this prohibit you from joining the show! We are working to find sponsors, and we may be able to help you do your fundraiser if needed. Just join us!You MUST sign up here on Cast 98 before auditions. If you have difficulty, please let us know. This is especially important for the children to be done prior.

Available Roles

  • Maria Rainer - Lead,20-30 years, Soprano, C4-B5, Belter, Yodeling, Legit, good dancer, A postulant at Nonnberg Abbey, Maria is a headstrong, free-spirited young woman. She is a spunky, opinionated, warm, resourceful, youthful, gentle and kind with much determination.
  • Captain Georg Von Trapp - Lead, Adult, Bass Baritone, Legit, F#2/Gb2-D5, Good dancer, A retired Austrian naval captain. He is a widower. He is polished, yet very military in the way he runs his life: underneath, he is warm, understanding and determined. Regimented, dignified, commanding, manly, polished, noble, intelligent.
  • Max Detweiler - Lead, Tenor, D3-F4, Legit, Good Dancer; A theatrical agent and First Secretary of Education and Culture - a personal friend of Von Trapp and sort of uncle to his children. He is clever at his job, charming, witty and quite pushy to get what he wants. He has a humorous personality. He enjoys the good life and those that live the good life.
  • Baroness Elsa Schraeder - Lead, Mezzo soprano, D4 to F5, 30-45 yrs, Legit, good dancer; A very wealthy widow, who is president of her late husband's corporation. Elegant, sophisticated city person. Clever and canny, she has begun a flirtation with Captain Von Trapp. she is very much into making a good social arrangement.
  • The Mother Abbess - Lead, Mature Adult, Soprano, B# to G#5/Ab5, Operatic, Legit, Mover; The Mother Abbess is an inspirational leader for all the nums at the Abby. she is a ture big-hearted moter figure, loved adored and respected. She has a bit of hidden spunk.
  • Liesl Von Trapp - Lead, Late teen girl, Mezzo Soprano, Legit, to E5, good dancing skills; At age 16, Liesel is the eldest of the Von Trapp siblings. she is innocent, naive, coy, flirtations, headstrong and infatuated with Rolf. She is pretty but unsophisticated and tends to think everything is wonderful. She has a maternal edge to her and cares very deeply and lovingly for her younger siblings.
  • Friedrich Von Trapp - Supporting, Male, plays 14yrs, Tenor, Legit, C4 to G5, must be able to move; He is 14 and is proud to be a boy. He has a tough exterior and is very much trying to be "the man" of the family; desperately needs his father.
  • Louisa Von Trapp - Supporting, Female, Plays 13 yr old, Mezzo Soprano, C4 to G5, Must be able to move; She is 13, clever and full of mischief. She is the master of pranks and enjoys pulling them on others. she is quite a tomboy, has a rebellious attitude, and misses her mother a great deal.
  • Kurt Von Trapp - Supporting, Countertenor/falsetto, sings C4 to G5, plays 10yrs old, yodeling, legit, must be able to move. He is 10. He wants to be 11 and introduces himself as "11 almost". He is the second boy and the middle of the children. He often tried to act manly and is outspoken against the previous governesses. He is gentle and a peacemaker.
  • Brigitta Von Trapp - Supporting, Mezzo Soprano, Played as 9yrs, C4 to G5, Legit, must be able to move; She is 9. She is smart as a whip, very perceptive and always tells the truth whether you like it or not. She is an avid reader and suspicious of "Uncle Max"
  • Marta Von Trapp - Supporting, Mezzo Soprano, Played as 7yrs old, C4 to G5, must be able to move; She is 7. she is one of the quietest von Trapps. She loves the color pink, is very inquisitive, smart and gentle
  • Gretyl Von Trapp - Supporting, Mezzo Soprano, Plays a 5yr old, Legit, C4 to G5, must be able to move; She is 5. She is the younges Von Trapp. She is very quiet when first introduced by her father. She is sweet, loving and wants attention. She is cute, adorable and endearing.
  • Rolf Gruber - Supporting, Late Teen, Baritone, C4 to E5; Legit, Good dancing skills; Rolf is 17 and is the telegram delivery boy friend of Liesl. He is self important, boasting, a very pleasant young man, and somewhat aggressive but in a gentle way. Rold has Hitler as his paternal role model and the Nazi regime as a future goal. He seems to know an enormous amount of what is going on because of his job and seems to relish in his spying tactics.
  • Sister Berthe - Supporting, Mature Adult, C4 to E5, Mezzo Soprano, must be able to move; A nun who is the Mistress of Novices. She does not think that headstrong, free-spirited postulants belong at the Abby. she is a no nonsense type, officious and very strict. She is nota supporter of Maria. She is a killjoy, self-righteous, and straight-laced, prim and a bit of a prude.
  • Sister Margaretta - Supporting, Age 20+, Mezzo soprano, Legit, B3 to E5, Must be able to move; A nun who is the Mistress of Pstulants. she is kind and understanding. A supporter of Maria. she is positive, encouraging, concerned and has a sense of humor. .
  • Sister Sophia - Featured, 30+, Mezzo Soprano, Legit, B3 to E5, Must be able to move; She is one who always stays in line. she is very dutiful and kind. she would rather take the middle road to avoid controversy.
  • Franz - Featured, 30+, Spoken Voice, Non-Singer, Non-Dancer; Originally a sort of protector to Captain Von Trapp in the Navy, he is now retired into his position as valet, which he carries out with somber efficiency. He is humorless and appears harmless but underneath we discover he is secretly plotting with the Nazi party Anschluss.
  • Frau Schmidt - Featured, 40+, Spoken Voice, Non-Singer, Non-Dancer; The Von Trapp family housekeeper, she does her job eficiently but without affection. she is strong and somewhat domination. She has been around a long time and hates the way she is treated with whistles by the Baron. It affects her dignity. she appears to be a thoroughly reliable member of the staff and respected by all.
  • Herr Zeller - Featured, Aged 40, Non-Singer, Non-Dancer, Spoken Voice; A sort of district governor appointed by the Nazi Regime to prepare the Anschluss. He is overbearing, arrogant and autocratic, self-important and pompous. Stern and unsmiling, a typical Naz4i official whose primary concern is to see that everyone toes the line.
  • Baron Elberffel - Featured, Aged 30+ Non-Singer, Must be able to move; A neighbor of the Von Trapps and one of the "Old Guards" of Austria - violently opposed to the takeover of his beloved country by Nazi Germany. The Baron attends the ball thrown by Captain Von Trapp in Elsa's honor.
  • Baroness Elberfeld - Featured, Age 30+, Spoken Voice, non-singer, must be able to move; Neighbor of Captain Bon Trapp. Wife to Baron Elberfeld. She attends the ball thrown by Captain Von Trapp in Elsa's honor.
  • Admiral Von Schreiber - Featured, Aged 30+, Non-Singer, Non-Dancer; He is an important figure in the Austrian Navy and appears to be much respected by Captain Von Trapp. He has obviously agreed to be part of the new regime with Germany. He arrives to collect Captain Bon Trapp and bring him to Berlin.
  • A New Postulant - Featured, Teen 16+, Mezzo Soprano, Legit, B3 to E5, must be able to move; A smart, well-dressed young girl who has a walk-on moment only- no dialogue.
  • Saengerbund of Herwegen Trio - Featured, Male and Female, 18+, Non speaking, non-singing, non-dancer; Three person performance group who wins 3rd place in the Festival Concert.
  • Fraulein Schweiger - Featured, Female 18+, Non-singer, non-dancer; Female performer who wins 2nd place in the Festival Concert. She is overly appreciative.
  • Nuns Ensemble - Featured,14+, Mezzo Soprano, Legit, C4 to E5, Must be able to move; 20-25 women who are nuns, novices and postulants who live in the Noonberg Abby.
  • Austrian and Nazi Ensemble - Featured, 18+, Men and Women, Strong Dancers and Strong Actors, Some speaking parts, non-singing; Men and Women with strong dance and acting abilities to perform onstage the roles of Nazi soldiers, permier dancers in "The Lonely Goatherd" scene, dancing neighbors and friends who come to the Captain's party, Salzburg citizens who attend the wedding of Maria and the Captain.
