What To Expect At Auditions

Auditions are announced for The Milburn Stone Theatre at Cecil College’s February/March 2025 Production of Rodgers’ & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma.

All roles are available. In addition, The Milburn Stone Theatre is committed to Cecil College’s principles of diversity, equity, and inclusivity, and encourages performers of all ethnicities, races, backgrounds, genders, and ages to audition but they will be performed as originally written. Ages listed are considered estimates.

Callbacks:

Callbacks for Rodgers’ & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma will be held on Monday, October 28th from 6pm to 10pm, Callback notifications will be sent out by Friday, October 25th at 5pm. The callback process will consist of a dance call at 6pm, along with cold readings from the script and singing songs from the production.

Audition Preparation:

An accompanist will be provided so please bring sheet music for the accompanist to play. Performing with an accompanist is strongly preferred, but you may provide tracks if you do not have sheet music.

Please Note: Amplification will not be provided and playing backing tracks off a cell phone (without proper additional amplification) is strongly discouraged.

Rehearsals:

Rehearsals for Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma will begin in early November. Rehearsals will be based on both performer and production staff availability, so please submit all known conflicts at the time of auditions. The Milburn Stone Theatre traditionally rehearses between 2 to 4 times a week.

Please Note: Cecil College will be closed on the following dates:

November 26th at 5pm through December 2nd at 7am in Observation of the Thanksgiving Holiday
December 24th at 5pm through January 2nd at 7am in Observation of the Winter Holidays
All day January 19th through January 21st at 7am in Observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Curly - (Male Presenting, Baritone, 18 - 40) A handsome young cowboy of great skill – and he knows it. Hailing himself as the
Laurey - (Female Presenting, Soprano, 18 - 40) Aunt Eller's niece, growing into a young lady, Laurey is at an age where she wants so many things that she can't seem to make up her mind, including who should take her to the Box Social. Independent and fiercely stubborn, Laurey questions social expectations. While her affection leans to Curly, she is attracted to Jud as well, though he scares her. In the end, Laurey does what she needs to do, boldly, by firing Jud and choosing Curly.
Aunt Eller - (Female Presenting, Mezzo, 40+) Laurey's aunt; a hearty woman of about fifty. The proprietress of her family’s farm, Aunt Eller is a respected authority within the community. She is friendly and good-humored but does not suffer foolishness. Aunt Eller keeps the peace while holding a protective eye over Laurey and Curly. By request of the crowd, she acts as auctioneer for the Box Social.
Jud Fry - (Male Presenting, Baritone, 18 - 40) Aunt Eller and Laurey's rough-hewn farmhand, Jud lives in a smokehouse, where he displays farm tools and postcards of nude women. A social outcast, he has a murky and questionable past. Lonely and misunderstood, Jud is desperate for connection, making his desire for Laurey both heartbreaking and potentially dangerous.
Will Parker - (Male Presenting, Tenor, 18 - 40) Charming and goofily thick-headed, Will is a prize-winning steer roper who just got back from the Kansas City Fair, where he won the $50 he needs to marry Ado Annie, his promised girl. Despite his poor judgment and comic inability to handle money, Will manages – somehow – to win Ado Annie’s hand.
Ado Annie Carnes - (Female Presenting, Soprano, 18 - 40) Vivacious, playful and open-hearted, Ado Annie has just discovered what it means to be an attractive young girl – men hadn’t paid any mind until recently. Promised to Will Parker, she nonetheless agrees to accompany Ali Hakim to the Box Social while Will is away. Which man does she prefer? Whoever she's with, of course.
Ali Hakim - (Male Presenting, Baritone, 18-40) A peddler who has wandered into town, Ali Hakim is an opportunist, a shrewd businessman, and a bit of a player. Cornered into marrying Ado Annie, he must think and act quickly to reverse his fortune.
Andrew Carnes - (Male Presenting, Baritone, 40+) He is very protective of his daughter, Ado Annie. He doesn’t want Will Parker to marry her because he believes the cowboy’s life to be risky and unreliable. To prove this isn’t true he asks for Will to maintain $50 in order to have his daughter’s hand in marriage. He is a rancher, and doesn’t feel very kind to cowboys in general.
Gertie Cummings - (Female Presenting, Soprano, 18 - 40) A young woman who jumps on the opportunity to have Curly take her to the Box Social, Gertie has an annoying, distinctive laugh.
Ike Skidmore - (Male Presenting, Baritone, 40+) A local man who helps get a crowd of folks from Bushyhead to his ranch for the Box Social.
Cord Elam - (Male Presenting, Baritone, 40+) One of the men in town, a federal marshal.
Fred - (Male Presenting, Baritone, 18-40) Farmer, Another man in town, one of Curly's friends.
Slim - (Male Presenting, Baritone, 18-40) Farmer, A friend of Will Parker's
Katie - (Female Presenting, Alto/Mezzo/Soprano, 18 - 40) One of Laurey’s Friends, Sings with Laurey in “Many A New Day” and has solo lines in “Out of My Dreams”
