When former spouses Elyot and Amanda accidentally reunite on their honeymoons with new partners, their rekindled passion quickly spirals into chaos—setting off a witty and volatile battle of love, jealousy, and temptation.
Noël Coward’s Private Lives is a witty and stylish comedy of manners exploring love, marriage, and the fine line between passion and chaos. The play includes portrayals of marital conflict, mild physical comedy involving domestic arguments, and references to smoking and drinking.
CAST BREAKDOWN: 5 roles (3 Women, 2 Men)
Elyot Chase — Male, any age
Charming, witty, sophisticated, and volatile. Elyot is recently remarried to Sybil but still passionately in love with his ex-wife, Amanda. Quick-tempered and prone to sarcasm, he embodies both elegance and emotional chaos. Requires strong comedic timing and chemistry with Amanda.
Amanda Prynne (née Chase) — Female, any age
Elyot’s ex-wife and Victor’s new bride. Glamorous, intelligent, and impulsive — Amanda matches Elyot in wit, passion, and temper. Their love/hate dynamic drives the play’s humor and emotional tension.
Sibyl Chase — Female, any age
Elyot’s new, younger wife. Romantic, somewhat naïve, and easily flustered. Sybil adores Elyot but is unprepared for his mercurial nature and the reappearance of Amanda. A comedic but sympathetic role.
Victor Prynne — Male, any age
Amanda’s new husband. Sturdy, polite, and rather conventional. Victor is the steady contrast to Elyot’s volatility, often serving as the straight man in the chaos. Has moments of frustration and vulnerability beneath his composure.
Louise — Female, any age
A French maid in the Paris flat. Speaks mostly in French, often irritated by the antics of her employers. A small but scene-stealing role requiring strong physical comedy and timing.
