What To Know About This Production
Goldfish: An Oakland Love Story is a meditation on memory, healing, and resilience. Through the eyes of Malachi, a MACRO first responder, and Fifth, a silent soccer player reclaiming his voice, the film weaves Oakland’s beauty and struggle into a story of love, community, and the art of beginning again. Like the goldfish, the characters learn to forget what weighs them down, to live in the flow of abundance, and to carry an enduring love for their city.

Cast List For Goldfish: An Oakland Love Story
Available Roles
Malachi - A seasoned MACRO worker on the streets of Oakland, Malachi carries the weight of other people’s pain alongside his own. Compassionate and committed, he is the bridge between the unhoused and the systems meant to support them. Yet inside, he’s haunted by memories of personal failures and struggles he can’t easily shake. Janelle’s reminder that he must “forget like a goldfish” becomes his survival code: a way to keep showing up for his community with love, despite what each day demands.
Janelle - Malachi’s partner and quiet pillar of strength. She is intuitive, wise, and deeply grounded, offering him perspective when the burden of his work threatens to consume him. It’s Janelle who reframes the goldfish’s memory as a gift — a way to let go and live in freedom. Through her, Malachi finds both comfort and clarity, reminding him that love is what makes forgetting possible.
Fifth - A gifted soccer player with dreams bigger than the streets that raised him. Fifth’s childhood is shattered by a house fire that takes his mother’s life and by his brother Shakur's descent into hustling. Left to fend for himself, he drifts into addiction and despair, searching for the family he’s lost. Yet beneath the pain is resilience: the burning desire to play again, to heal, and to prove himself when a chance to try out for the Oakland Roots appears.
Shakur - Fifth’s older brother and guardian, torn between love and survival. Shakur turns to dealing drugs to keep the family afloat, but his choices lead to tragedy. He’s scarred by guilt from the fire that claimed his sister’s life and from leaving Fifth alone after his arrest. Shakur is a man who wanted to be a protector but became a cautionary tale — a reflection of Oakland’s struggles and sacrifices.
Supe - Malachi's boss at MACRO, committed to the program’s mission but weighed down by bureaucracy. The Supervisor is pragmatic and often stern, pushing Malachi to follow protocol and not get too emotionally attached. Yet beneath the tough exteMalachi’s heart — and a silent recognition that frontline workers like him carry burdens no policy can erase.
OG Mike - An elder statesman of the block, OG Mike is a survivor who commands respect from the young men of Oakland. He’s been through the system — the hustling, the prison bids, the streets — and now stands as a mentor figure, especially to Pierre and Fifth. Though hardened, he carries wisdom about resilience, loyalty, and the cost of choices. His presence in the story grounds it in the lived reality of Oakland, bridging past and present generations.
