What To Know About This Production

Poster image for Company by Theatre UP

Sondheim's game-changing musical is a sophisticated and honest look at modern adult relationships.

From musical theatre's most renowned composer, COMPANY is largely regarded as a trailblazer of the dark-comedy, modern-musical genre and is the winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Lyrics, and Best Book.

On the night of his 35th birthday, confirmed bachelor Robert contemplates his unmarried state. Over the course of a series of dinners, drinks, and even a wedding, his friends explain the pros and cons of taking on a spouse. The habitually single Robert is forced to question his adamant retention of bachelorhood during a hilarious array of interactions. COMPANY features an energetic score containing many of Stephen Sondheim's best known songs. The strength of the piece lies in its vivid and real characters, and every audience member will see reflections of themselves in at least one of the characters onstage.

COMPANY is directed & choreographed for Theatre UP by Artistic Director Andrew Lidestri with music direction by Kristen Bushway.

What To Expect At Auditions

Auditions will be held beginning at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, December 3 and Thursday, December 4 at First United Methodist Church (18 Main Street, Littleton, NH 03561).
Callbacks will be held at the same location after auditions on December 4.

After submitting the audition signup form, you will receive a confirmation email that includes your specific audition time (a five minute block within the time slot range you select).

Casting:
Adult actors with excellent vocal and acting skills. Sondheim's music is very challenging and will require skilled singers to put this wonderful play together during our short rehearsal process. All adult community members are very welcome! All roles are open.

How to Prepare: Sondheim musicals are amazing, but a little complicated. Therefore, this is a long description. Please read it all.

Auditioners are asked to prepare a short song they know well, preferably from classical or contemporary musical theatre repertoire. Please bring sheet music. (The standard length of an audition song is roughly 16 bars. Think of this as one verse or one minute. In the interest of time, longer auditions will probably be cut short.) Singing with accompaniment is REQUIRED, and an accompanist will be provided. (Please look for sheet music that has a melody line for you and an accompaniment written out underneath it for the pianist. The pianist will not be able to improvise songs for you at the audition.) *Part of the audition process will include harmony singing to see how well people can hold their own part and blend with a group.
While there is no set choreography requirement for this show, our production will have some numbers with a significant amount of punctuated movements. Dance training is not required, but a keen sense of rhythm is, as well as the ability to learn choreography steps.
Actors may be asked to read from the script.

Fast Tracking
Fast track auditions are intended to save time in the auditioning and casting process. UP makes a firm commitment to show no favoritism amongst its performers or production teams. Auditionees may request consideration for a fast track audition if they performed in an UP musical in the current season or the season immediately prior; if the director of that production is the same as the director of this production; and if the auditionee sang more than one solo line in that production.
For Company, you may request consideration for a fast track audition if you sang more than one SOLO line in UP's fall 2024 production of Fiddler on the Roof or UP's spring 2025 production of Something Rotten.
To request fast tracking, please email our team.
If you have already been pre-approved for fast tracking, please follow the instructions in your confirmation email.

Community Theatre
UP is a community theatre that strives for excellence. Experience is not needed to audition or be cast in our productions, although some shows require specific skills. We often teach as we go. We are friendly and welcoming and want you to succeed, so please don't be nervous! We do not subscribe to favoritism and cast based solely on the best decisions for the production.
We recommend completing the audition signup process on a computer rather than on a mobile device.
