Who: Anyone in Grades 6-12. 

When: HS–December 4th in HHS Choir Room

Starting at 4 pm

What To Expect At Auditions

Audition Requirements:

For your individual audition, you will be performing for the directors only. We may ask you to stay/come back in and read/sing with others later in the audition process if we need to hear you again. 

Prepare a song of your choice that will show us your vocal range and ability. You will probably NOT be asked to sing the entire song. You will be singing acapella (without piano accompaniment). You do not need to sing a song from the musical, but you may if you wish. You may be asked to vocalize (do a few vocal warm-ups) so we can check your vocal range. 

If you would like to audition for a role in the ensemble (chorus) you may audition with a group. Anyone who wishes to be considered for a speaking role must audition alone. NO EXCEPTIONS. 

Prepare a monologue of your choice. You can find monologues online with a Google search if you need to. You do not need to memorize your monologue, but you do need to be familiar with it. In other words: practice it! If auditioning for the ensemble, you do not need to prepare a monologue. 

Fill out and bring all signed packet forms with you to your audition, including:

-Musical/Crew Audition Form (online)

-Production Contract (outside the choir room)

Please do not give these forms to Mrs. Jacky during the school day. Bring them to your audition.

LIGHTS/SOUND/CREW: If you are interested in working on lights, sound or crew (set, make-up, hair, costumes, publicity), please fill out an audition form and sign up for the 4pm crew time slot. The directors will speak with you. You don’t need to sing/do a monologue. 

MAKE SURE you have filled out the section of the audition form entitled “scheduling conflicts.” CHECK YOUR CALENDAR BEFORE AUDITIONING. We will take this into consideration when casting for this musical. There will be some Saturday rehearsals. Tech week/dress rehearsals (week of March 16) and all performances are REQUIRED for all cast and crew. No exceptions.

About the musical:

The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world’s most beloved musical. Featuring a trove of cherished songs, including “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and the title number, The Sound of Music won the hearts of audiences worldwide, earning five Tony Awards and five Oscars. The inspirational story, based on the memoir of Maria Augusta Trapp, follows an ebullient postulate who serves as governess to the seven children of the imperious Captain von Trapp, bringing music and joy to the household. But as the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, Maria and the entire von Trapp family must make a moral decision.

Available Roles

  • Maria Rainer - A postulant at Nonnberg Abbey – young, free spirited, warm, gentle and kind with much determination.
  • Captain Georg Von Trapp - A retired Austrian naval captain. Polished, yet very military in the way he runs his life to repress his sadness over the death of his wife; underneath, he is warm, understanding, and determined.
  • Max Detweiller - Charming and vital; a man of sophistication who enjoys the good life; true and loyal friend to the von Trapp family.
  • Elsa Schrader - A baroness of taste and elegance, sophisticated, dignified and mature.
  • Mother Abbess - Motherly, understanding, strong and authoritative, but kind.
  • Sister Berthe - Mistress of Novices, prudish, straight laced with a quick tongue, she is less tolerant than other nuns.
  • Sister Margaretta - Mistress of Postulants, very kind, understanding and concerned.
  • Sister Sophia - Neither demanding nor critical, sticks with the rules.
  • Franz - The von Trapp butler, rather formal but not without spirit, he is very German and loyal to the Fascist cause.
  • Frau Schmidt - The housekeeper, stoic, very little personality; she does her job efficiently but without affection. Strong and somewhat dominating.
  • Herr Zeller - Stern and unsmiling, a typical Nazi official whose primary concern is to see that everyone toes the line.
  • Rolf Gruber - Suitor to Liesl, telegram delivery boy, later Nazi soldier. A very pleasant young man, somewhat aggressive but in a gentle way.
  • Liesl von Trapp - The oldest child, blossoming into a young lady with an interest in boys. She has a maternal edge to her and cares very deeply for her younger siblings.
  • Friedrich von Trapp - Tough exterior, very much trying to be “the man” of the family.
  • Louisa von Trapp - Rebellious attitude
  • Kurt von Trapp - Gentle and mischievous.
  • Brigitta von Trapp - Smart, reads a lot.
  • Marta von Trapp - Very sweet and gentle.
  • Gretl von Trapp - Must have the cute factor.
