Hendersonville Theatre presents Appropriate by Branden Jacob-Jenkins.
Directed by Guillermo Jemmott.
AUDITION DATES: Saturday, November 29th (2pm-5pm) and Monday, December 1st (6pm-9pm). PLEASE ONLY SELECT ONE DATE TO AUDITION
When the Lafayette family reunites at their late father’s decaying Arkansas estate, old tensions ignite as they sift through his belongings—until a shocking discovery forces them to confront the dark truths buried in their past.
Appropriate explores complex family dynamics and America’s history through moments of humor, tension, and revelation. The play contains mature themes, strong language, and references to racism and historical racial violence. It also includes emotionally charged family conflict and discussions of death.
This production is recommended for audiences ages 16 and older.
CAST BREAKDOWN: 7 roles (4 men, 3 women)
Toni Lafayette — Female, 40s–50s
The eldest Lafayette sibling. Divorced, sharp-tongued, and deeply resentful, Toni feels burdened by responsibility for her late father’s estate and family legacy. A complex mix of bitterness, grief, and fierce loyalty.
Bo Lafayette — Male, 40s–50s
The middle sibling. A successful businessman living in New York with his wife and children. Rational and controlling, Bo tries to manage the family’s affairs while maintaining a veneer of civility, but his temper and entitlement often surface.
Rachael Lafayette — Female, 30s–40s
Bo’s wife. Practical, protective of her children, and an outsider to the Lafayette clan. Her politeness masks growing frustration with the family’s chaos and hostility.
Franz Lafayette — Male, late 30s–40s
The youngest sibling, long estranged from the family after a troubled past. Recently sober and seeking reconciliation, he’s burdened by guilt and self-doubt. His return reopens old wounds.
River — Female, 20s–30s
Franz’s partner. Earnest, spiritual, and idealistic, with a gentle presence that contrasts with the family’s intensity. Often tries to mediate conflict through empathy and mindfulness.
Rhys Lafayette — Male, 17–20s
Toni’s son. A high school or college-aged young man grappling with his identity, his mother’s volatility, and the weight of family history. Rhys often vacillates between rebellion and vulnerability, representing the next generation’s confrontation with inherited trauma.
Cassidy Lafayette — Female, 13–16
Bo and Rachael’s teenage daughter. Smart, curious, and increasingly aware of the family’s dysfunction. Her perspective offers glimpses of the next generation’s reckoning with the past.
Ainsley Lafayette — Male, 8–13
Bo and Rachael’s young son. Innocent, playful, and observant. Often on the edges of adult conflict, he embodies both the hope and confusion of youth in the midst of family turmoil.
