What To Expect At Auditions

MOE - Audition notice

Theatre Southwest is holding auditions for its upcoming production of AGATHA CHRISTIE’S MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS, written by Ken Ludwig and directed by Sean K. Thompson. This production will have a special opening on December 31 for the theatre’s annual New Year’s Eve gala, and then run the first three weekends in January of 2026, from the 2nd to the 17th.

Famed Belgian detective Hercule Poirot finds himself steaming toward intrigue on the world’s most famous train as he encounters a murder where everyone is the suspect. This 1930s whodunnit is a classic that you’ll want to be a part of.

For this production, adults with strong dramatic (and comedic) timing and an ability to master accents and layered characterizations are sought to audition on Sunday and Tuesday, November 2 and 3, 7:00 - 9:00pm both evenings. Rehearsals will run Sunday afternoons and Tuesday through Thursday evenings from November 9 - December 30 (with holiday time off).

No roles are precast. Characters available include:

Hercule Poirot: A famous Belgian detective hired to solve the murder.
Monsieur Bouc: A friend of Poirot and a director of the railway company.
Samuel Ratchett: A wealthy and disagreeable American businessman who is the victim of the murder.
Hector MacQueen: Ratchett's secretary and a suspect.
Mary Debenham: An English governess who is one of the main suspects.
Princess Dragomiroff: An elderly Russian princess who is a suspect.
Greta Ohlsson: A Swedish missionary and suspect.
Countess Andrenyi: A Hungarian countess and suspect.
Colonel Arbuthnot: A British Army officer and suspect.
Helen Hubbard: An outgoing American woman and suspect.
Cyrus Hardman: An American detective who is a suspect.
Michel the Conductor: The conductor of the Orient Express.
Dr. Constantine: The doctor who performs the initial examination of the body.

(NOTE: The role of Samuel Ratchett might be doubled with the role of Colonel Arbuthnot and the role of Michel the Conductor might be doubled with Head Waiter.)

Please bring a headshot and resume if available to the audition, and be prepared to read sides from the script. Auditioners are encouraged (but NOT required) to attend both evenings of auditions if possible. Casting will be announced by November 6.

  • Monsieur Bouc - A Belgian gentleman of good humor; playful, proud, generous; a predilection for grandeur; a whirlwind of energy; must be an excellent comedian. French accent. M, 30s - 60s
  • Colonel Arbuthnot - Scotsman, also middle aged, handsome, very matter of fact, occasionally tender; must have great comic timing. Scottish accent. M, 30s - 40s. Might be doubled with Samuel Ratchett
  • Samuel Ratchett - Middle-aged American businessman, evil at heart and frightening, brusque, unforgiving, stern demeanor; pushy, and domineering. M. 30s - 40s. Might be doubled with Colonel Arbuthnot
  • Helen Hubbard - An outspoken and flamboyant American from the Midwest; jovial, obnoxious, domineering, deliciously nosy and brash; unapologetic; must be an excellent comedienne. Also sings. Should be familiar with the song “Alexander’s Ragtime Band”. Minnesota accent. F, 40s - 70s
  • Countess Andrenyi - Brilliantly beautiful, like something out of a fairytale; impeccably put together, with a warmth that wins over everyone she meets; her delicacy belies a steely edge; she is no wilting flower. Hungarian accent. F, 30s - 50s
  • Mary Debenham - An English beauty; a governess, capable yet romantic; a sadness around her eyes and a hardness about her person. English accent. F, 20s - 30s
  • Princess Dragomiroff - A Russian dowager; very formal, a sweeping, impressive presence; imperial, impatient. Everyone knows when she enters the room. More battle axe than princess. Russian accent. F, 40s - 70s
  • Hector MacQueen - Tightly wound, edgy and nervous; he seems to always be on the verge of falling apart or coming unwound. Assistant to Samuel Ratchett. American accent. M, 20s - 50s
  • Michel the Conductor - A good-looking Frenchman, with a quiet, almost grave sense of humor; unfailingly polite. French accent. M, 20s - 60s. Might be doubled with Head Waiter
  • Head Waiter - A Turkish waiter, snooty, smooth; must have great comic timing. Turkish accent. M, 20s - 60s. Might be doubled with Michel the Conductor
  • Greta Ohlsson - Inherently odd, and very devout Swedish woman; a frightened, sheeplike quality; must be an excellent comedienne with an impeccable Swedish accent. F, 20s - 60s
