Auditions For Jesus Christ Superstar

What To Expect At Auditions

Summer Lyric Theatre at Tulane University

2021 Audition Information

VOCAL AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

Jesus Christ Superstar: Please submit a 16 to 32-bar cut (or 30-45) secs of a song from rock musical or a commercial song (preferably Rock, but Pop and R&B could work). Please do not submit a whole song. You can sing something from the show, but please make sure your selection shows off your range and acting ability. If you would like to submit two song cuts to show contrasting styles, you may but please remember you are not required to do so.

Children for Superstar: At present we are checking with AEA and Tulane regarding using children in-person for this production. If we cannot use them in-person, we will have them perform virtually. To be considered, children (Ages 8-13) should just submit one song showing displaying their singing ability.

DANCE AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

All shows will have movement of some kind. Jesus Christ Superstar will have a small ensemble, who will have to sing and dance.

Jesus Christ Superstar:

If you would like to be considered for Jesus, Herod, Pharisees, a/o Apostles, please submit the Movement or Dance video based on your abilities from the combination mentioned above.

If you want to be considered for the Ensemble (as well as another role), you must submit the Dance combination.

SLT Dancer Call Combination Video:  https://youtu.be/dOb80ZL47kg

Music for both combinations can be found on the SLT Website.

AUDITION VIDEO SUBMISSION

You can have separate videos for your songs and dance/movement videos, but the best way would put them all into one video. If that is beyond what you can do, don’t worry about it. Make sure your main vocal video URL is in the Video Submission area on the Audition Sheet. Then, copy the other link(s) into the Additional Text section of that form.

Videos need to be uploaded to a platform like YouTube or Vimeo, and then submit the URL. You cannot upload videos to this audition platform.

We will be offering two (2) Zoom Sessions to assist people with self-taping their auditions and uploading/inputting information onto our new platform, Cast 98. These sessions will take place April 22nd & 23rd at 7:00pm. Please send an email to mmckelve@tulane.edu to register.

ACTORS’ EQUITY ASSOCIATION & EMC

We will be hiring AEA members for each production. We will have at least one (1) AEA contract for both Songs for a New World and Grand Night for Singing, and three (3) contracts for Jesus Christ Superstar. We will also be hiring at least one (1) AEA stage manager for Superstar.

Since Summer Lyric is a bonded company with Actors’ Equity Association, all cast members and stage managers will be eligible for EMC points if they are members of the Equity Member Candidacy program.

HEALTH & SAFETY PROTOCOLS

Summer Lyric Theatre will be adhering to all Health & Safety Protocols set forth by Actors’ Equity Association, Tulane University, the City of New Orleans, and the State of Louisiana. The company will pay for all COVID testing for cast and crew members required in these protocols. A Healthy & Safety Monitor or Officer will be hired for each production.

EQUITY, DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

Summer Lyric Theatre at Tulane University is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to creating a safe space for its company members. Universal casting practices including any race, gender or physical challenge will be in effect for all productions. SLT will be contracting Equity & Justice for Institutional Change to facilitate Anti-Racism training for the company.

Jesus (Lead): Male, 20-39.  rock tenor; 20s- 30s; chest voice B2-Ab4, powerful falsetto/scream up to G5; this role demands a well-rounded baritone voice that also has a super extended upper register, a true “rock star”; this role does not dance but must be comfortable moving. All Ethnicities.

Judas (Lead): Male, 20-39.  rock/soul tenor; 20s-30s. Mary (Supporting): Female, 25-39. belt mezzo; 20s –30s; (G#3-C5); a former prostitute, now follower of Jesus, grappling with her feelings and her faith; seeking singers who can communicate her solo as more than just a simple love song; this role does not dance but must be comfortable moving.  All Ethnicities.

Pontius Pilate (Supporting): Male, 30-49: Baritone or baritenor, (A2-Bb4); a diverse musical journey through both acts requires a singer of great stillness, yet with the ability to tear the roof off in the final bars. All Ethnicities.
